High Watch Recovery Center was established in 1939 as the world’s first 12-Step treatment center. Since then, High Watch has led thousands of clients from the grip of alcohol and drug addiction to the freedom of recovery. They offer inpatient, intervention services, an extended care program, IOP, transitional sober living for women, and aftercare support. For clients who require a more flexible schedule, High Watch additionally offers online Telehealth IOP and AA meetings. Each client in the inpatient program receives an individual bio-psycho-social evaluation to create an customized treatment plan that’s right for their needs. Each client is assigned an experienced 12-Step coach to work with in a one on one setting. High Watch has an Empowering Women in Recovery group designed to help women recognize and honor their strength and resiliency and explore ways to parlay those into their recovery journey. Topics include breaking the chain of low self-esteem, increasing self-care, practicing boundary setting, and addressing the specific challenges women in recovery face. High Watch also has a 50+ group to discuss the unique challenges clients 50 and older face in life and recovery such as relationships with adult children and grandchildren, loss of spouses, retirement, health related issues which are part of the aging process, facing one’s own mortality, and how they view their future. Finally, High Watch has a Relationships in Recovery group designed to provide clients the opportunity to explore how to make and maintain healthy relationships.

Nestled on 200 wooded acres in the lush Litchfield Hills of Connecticut, High Watch Recovery Center is a residential medical facility that provides state-of-the-art treatment for substance abuse disorders and co-occurring psychiatric disorders. High Watch’s cozy home has comfortable bedrooms and common areas and a fitness center. Outside, clients will find an abundance of roaming space amongst the Connecticut greenery. Equine therapy is provided on-site at their stable to improve impulse control, accountability, responsibility, self-confidence, stress tolerance, problem solving skills, and self-control. High Watch is Joint Commission accredited, an NAATP member, and LegitScript certified. They accept private insurance.

High Watch Recovery Center changed my life forever. The facility is beautiful. Looks like a college campus. The program was very rigorous and intense. Lots of support and clinical programming. Medical support was available 24/7. The aftercare planning began the first week of my stay and assisted me with developing supports/contacts in my hometown. I was able to participate in their IOP program that also helped me with transitioning back into life. The alumni services are tremendous and reinforces that HW will always be there to support your sobriety. Couldn’t have turned my life around without AA and HW. Thank you.

Financially Unethical This is an overpriced step study. The step coaches are great, but not worth the $82,000 they billed my insurance company. NOT a dual diagnosis treatment center as you only get 1 to 1 1/2 hours with a licensed therapist weekly. Groups were generally run by recently graduated “guests”. The one that was supposed to be clinicians, was a different on every session due to…. “many reasons”, so no real progress there. And, they lie about the cost of IOPs and then later charge your credit card about $1000 and refuse to stand behind their word. Sooo unethical and disappointing.

High Watch Recovery Center is a fantastic facility all-around! I cannot say enough about the quality of the campus, the staff, and the program overall. I spent 90+ days there and have never felt better. From admissions to the therapists to the general staff - there is so much support and love. More importantly - I developed a very solid network with other guests during my stay - friendships that are still going strong. High Watch also ensures that a connection to the program is maintained through Saturday nigh AA-meetings (open to the public), an alumni Facebook page, and a weekly Transitions programs aimed at helping recently discharged guests with their transition back to general life. There is a ton of love at High Watch - and I can honestly say it was a life-changing experience. Admissions worked diligently and patiently with me - and, for this, I have the utmost respect for the facility. The most important part of the program is that it is 12-step based and their is a great emphasis for guests to work with a step-coach in the journey toward recovery. There are numerous electives and meetings to attend as well. You are kept busy - and this structure has the right balance of program and "free-time" (generally used to connect with other guests). I had the privilege of participating in the Extended Guest program which granted me responsibilities and helped me rebuild my confidence and work on my personal recovery. Other rehab facilities cannot compare. If you are serious about recovery - High Watch Recovery Center is the place for you. If you put in the work and effort - there is plenty of support and love to guide you. PS - The food is unbelievable.

Review from Rehabs.com

I had spent my entire life feeling like I needed to perform in front of people in order to gain acceptance, to the point where I lost who I fundamentally was without all the masks I chose to wear throughout each day. High Watch provided a safe, loving environment where I was finally able to be the person my higher power intended me to be. I was given the skills to practice accepting myself without adding a substance, whether that was alcohol, drugs, food or a relationship. High Watch also gave me a full education on the twelve steps of Alcoholics Anonymous so that once I discharged, I felt comfortable going to meetings and being a part of the AA community. In addition to this, my underlying mental health issues were simultaneously addressed which I now know was imparitive for long term recovery. My depression fueled my drinking and my drinking fueled my depression. The therapists and psychiatrists cultivated the healing environment that was vital to realizing the connection between my mental health and addiction. One of the best things about High Watch is the fact that most of the staff is in recovery and they’re very open about their own stories. It gave me hope to see that it was indeed possible to recover and thrive. As a 20-something year old woman, I had a pattern of rebelling against authority figures so it was crucial to know that there was no hierarchy between guests and staff. The food is amazing and the open Saturday night dinners are famous within the CT AA community so even after I left, I could come back to the place that provided my recovery foundation. Having a full fitness center helps to incorporate a healthy lifestyle that can easily be translated back into societal living. The Litchfield Hills are the ideal settling for stabilization and High Watch truly celebrates the beautiful land, tight-knit culture and rich history. I had no clue what my higher power was going in to treatment here, but looking out my window each morning and seeing the sun peeking around the corners of each ever-changing tree taught me that there was something bigger out there than me, than my disease.

Review from Rehabs.com

I spent about two years attending meetings of Alcoholics Anonymous, going through the motions to placate family and friends, and becoming a great collector of 30-day sobriety coins before I finally surrendered and entered treatment at Highwatch. Immediately, I knew that I was surrounded by an empathetic staff that understood my problem with alcohol and where it had taken me, because most of them had experienced and recovered from the same themselves. Yes, I was in the right place. The care in all respects was designed to give me the tools that I needed to sustain my recovery, and to re-enter the AA community with a thorough understanding of what the 12-step approach to recovery was all about. Highwatch’s treatment philosophy is comprehensive, addressing the medical and psychiatric complications that so often impede full recovery from the disease of addiction, all within the spiritual framework of the 12 steps. Highwatch not only provided the welcoming and encouraging environment of an experienced and professional staff, but the opportunity for fellowship with other like-minded guests where I developed enduring friendships of now 8 years duration, and without a doubt will be lifelong.
