Our Philosophy is summarized in two simple statements, first we believe in you, we believe in your capacity to have a recovery from addiction that suits you and is individual to you. We believe that each person has to find a recovery that works for them and that your recovery will be immensely more rewarding than your addiction. From this emerges our second philosophy statement, this is actually a question that we use to determine every aspect of your treatment here. Our question is - will this, - whatever it is, enhance or detract from your recovery? Your recovery does not happen at DARA what you do before you come here and after you leave determines your recovery but at DARA we give you a chance to work out your unique recovery. This starts with physical health and de-stressing. The physical program includes regular Thai massage, a physical activity program tailored to your individual capacity and excellent healthy and nutritious food. Mentally we have a focus on mindfulness and meditation with several sessions each week. The specialist staff here, physical therapists, excellent chefs and trained meditation coaches are committed to your physical and mental wellbeing. Our mission is to make your time at DARA a unique experience in your life, an opportunity to focus on yourself and to prepare yourself physically and emotionally to develop your own recovery. This is something we cannot do for you but we can give you every resource we can to help you achieve it. We believe in you.

Review from Rehabs.com

I attended DARA for 28 days this year (2018) by my own volition. I was uncertain, cynical and concerned about having to spend time with people who might not be anything like me and I didn't want to be brought down by their issues. I knew I didn't want to go to a 12 steps place as I have an issue with religion and not taking responsibility for your own actions and I didn't really consider myself as "spiritual" - more a very busy corporate woman who wanted a quick solution. I don't understand anybody who poorly reviews DARA. I'd never done anything like this in my life before and my experience was life changing. I'd be the first person to criticise someone for saying that but it really was. The counselling was the key. We all fall by the wayside because of our history and life experiences and everyone I met there told me things that I felt honoured to hear. I'm not a hippy kind of person and neither are the counsellors or all of the clients, which is what I was worried about. The clients - or friends as I would like to call them - came from all walks of life, with their own incredibly sad or amazing stories which they never forced on you. The commonalities though were that they were hugely intelligent, caring and non-judgemental. More surprising was the huge amount of laughter and fun that we all had together. Not to trivialise the work that DARA does but I had a particularly amazing group of clients/friends who were just bloody normal people and whilst there would be intensely sad times with tears (randomly, when you least expected it, from myself), we also laughed at each other and with each other. It wasn't the strange cult that I thought it would be. It was like going back to Uni - without the alcohol - with an amazing bunch of people that you could be totally honest with and dance around the pool in the sun or play water basketball with. Its hard work. Of course it's hard. You are opening up yourself to your therapist or your group and it can be massively painful. You don't want people to see you get upset and you have a huge amount of written work to do as well as an exercise schedule that you may balk at when you see it at first (as I did, having done no exercise for 20 years). You have enough time to yourself, I promise, to process stuff or just get away from everyone or talk to family. However, you want to be part of everything that goes on, you want to make the most of it. You might not feel like that for the first few days because you're tired, scared, confused, angry but if you don't make the most of it when you're feeling OK, you will regret it. I didn't know what I was walking into but I actually feel so lucky that I was able to afford to do this, to spend 28 days on myself in a beautiful, supportive and amazing environment. It's a cliche but I kind of understand myself a bit more and the journey is a continual one but I can not recommend DARA enough to anyone wanting to get away from the cycle of misery at home and wanting to come somewhere that is NOT a bland institution but a place where you experience holistic recovery and learn methods that will not only help you with your addiction, but take control of lots of aspects of your life

Can NOT recommend, despite the excellent food, personal trainers, massage, support and admin staff. The accommodations are hardly 'luxury' as advertised. At best, they're 3-star/good if you don't mind sharing your bed with ants, having only 1 towel which is replaced every 2 days, not being provided a wash cloth or bath mat and having to request a desk chair. A couple of the counselors were excellent, although mine took 4 one-on-one sessions to finally get my name right, i.e. certainly not excellent, not even good. Moreover, he gaslights - constantly. I had to request counselor changes TWICE before getting someone who listened. My biggest complaints, however, and thus the 2-star rating - Dara does not abide by its own rules or honour its agreements. WORST of all (for me)- I left for medical reasons on Day 17 (suspected lung cancer after an X-ray, CT-scan and pulmonary expert consultation in Trat) and was supposed to receive a refund of $2550US+ per Dara's client contract. Despite having made two inquiries about the refund to which I am entitled prior to my departure, I have not yet received a refund. Bottom line, you'd be better off going to a place like Canyon Ranch for 2 weeks than waste your money on Dara. P.S. The BEST things about this place are the dogs and cats. Sadly for those who are allergic, little is done to keep them out of public areas.

The therapists are really good. I asked them to contact my mum and we did same family sessions. I needed to know how to talk to her without it escalating so that was really really helpful. Probably the best thing for our relationship. The recreational activities are phenomenal. I got to learn to Scuba dive while I was too (For free).

Review from Rehabs.com

Stayed here many years ago 2015 but refused to stay on as all the good therapists quit leaving junior volunteers to running things while there was lack of therapists. Not what I was paying good money and my valuable time for. accommodation was bliss as they bought an old health retreat. And the food was excellent western varieties which was one of there good points. Gym equipment was rough and old or non existent. The phase work and group therapy is pretty much the same doesn’t matter where you go. I came back at start of 2018 knowing it’s a business and read good reviews, things would of only gotten better. As they make millions and it’s been a few years now. Not the case I felt very ripped off. All the therapists are now a lazy group of disinterested individuals enjoy their well payed jobs. The food has gone down hill, from western style food to cheaper Thai buffet, not the good Thai food we know. Brown rice etc. Accommodation is the same but looking really tired now with no improvements at all. Nothing Gym was a shock as it was pretty bad back many years ago, again nothing changed or added just rusting away. The people just keep coming so they don’t change anything for the better. All the clients were leaving going to other rehabs to finish there time. Sad. If I had a problem they happily point to towards the door with no refunds at all. Even after the first day. They have an excellent website to sell to us but it’s not like it when you arrive. Individualised no not at all.

Review from Rehabs.com

I’ve been to treatment centers in America seeing as that is where I am from, but I’ve never experienced a level of dedication like I did with DARA. I am talking everyone involved from the kitchen, to housekeeping, to the PT staff. The clinical team is always on standby after group for additional sessions if need be. If you need more than two therapy sessions a week, they are there to provide them. My days consisted of sleeping in an extremely comfortable bed with cable that includes HBO and CNN in the room (Chanthaburi location), going to breakfast, having groups up until lunch with breaks in between, a group in the afternoon, then I would play badminton in the afternoons with the PT staff. I even got to play soccer with clients and staff one day a week at an incredibly nice football pitch in the neighborhood. The soccer was always the highlight of the week, so much fun! I spent 7 months in DARA and I was only able to do that because I had so much to keep me occupied while staying there. We had daily evening group activities as well. The gym also helped me pass time (I lost 12lbs), as well as a really nice TV room. Some days after group, I would get together with the Thai staff and have ping pong tournaments if it was raining outside and we couldn’t play badminton. The level of care is so high at DARA. I get emotional thinking about it. These people saved my life, I was the addict of the hopeless variety, and their patience in helping me realize my denial, and also understand my addiction and where it derived from was what really made the difference in a successful journey in recovery for me. The clinical team really knows their stuff, and I was presented much more information on addiction and effective communication than I ever have in an American treatment center. The clinical team in Chanthaburi...they all have their strengths and different approaches to therapy and what a successful team they are! Their level of expertise is unmatched I assure you. They work together in perfect unison, and I really developed a special love and appreciation for these guys. My eyes tear up when I think of how they really reached out a helping hand so many times for me and other clients. They are so understanding and they care so much about what is going on for the clients on a day to day basis. I would highly recommend this place for anyone who is seeking to recover from alcohol or drugs. Not only is it affordable in comparison to the US, it is comfortable. The key word being comfortable. Think in terms of level of comfort vs. price. Another place with this level of dedication would be hard to come by. I thought I only had a drug problem going into DARA, but I came out with a whole new positive perspective on life and coping skills to deal with life on life’s terms. I couldn’t have had that experience at just any other treatment center. I will offer one slight suggestion: choose the Chanthaburi location for your stay. It is a close knit community, far more comfortable as far as accommodation goes, better weekend excursions, sometimes Wednesday night trek’s into the town’s night market, and is far more helpful because of the extra activities. On Sunday mornings we went for walks around a park in Chanthaburi or visited the Cathedral. It has a much more therapeutic environment. Of course, this was my unique experience of the place. I spent time in Chanthaburi AND one month on Koh Chang, and after that one month on Koh Chang I couldn’t wait to get back to Chanthaburi. Other than that I don’t know what to say, they have healthy food and it is delicious on top of being healthy. They have quality care, and I’ve never slept on a better bed. Do yourself a favor, get to this treatment center and get the help you need. What’s wrong with treating yourself with some relaxation and/or fun activities at the same time? No one said treatment has to be punishment. If you have questions or need clarification and you want to talk to me, an ex-client, who has found happiness in recovery.

We love hearing about your treatment experience
