Located in Fargo, Prairie Saint John’s offers compassionate care for children, teens, and adults facing mental illness, addiction, or both. Clients receive support through inpatient hospitalization, residential care, day treatment (PHP), and intensive outpatient programs (IOP). Psychiatric and addiction specialists help individuals manage symptoms like anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, and psychosis—offering hope, healing, and structure for those navigating a mental health or substance use crisis.

Learn Skills That Last Beyond Treatment

Treatment begins with a full assessment and continues with group, family, and individual therapy. Clients engage in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), medication management, and skill-building groups to promote emotional regulation and relapse prevention. Specialized programs support youth development and adult recovery through psychoeducation, anger management, and substance use education. Family involvement and discharge planning ensure each person builds confidence and practical tools for lasting recovery.

Bridge Care With Compassionate Space

Clients in day treatment can stay in furnished, shared apartments near the treatment campus, complete with kitchen and laundry access. Staff are present outside program hours to support a safe, structured experience. Visitors are welcome with approval, and travel support is available for out-of-town families. Each setting—whether hospital-based or residential—is designed to provide a calm, respectful space where individuals can heal and transition to the next step in care.

Care Options

Levels of Care

Substance use and mental health issues can occur simultaneously or as primary conditions. Effective treatment explores how mental health conditions contribute to addiction, and vice-versa. Many rehabs treat substance use disorders and mental health conditions with personalized care plans.
Residential
Not Offered at This Center
Residential programs for substance use and mental health with structured care and 24/7 monitoring. Treatment takes place on-site, with behavioral health professionals often providing care in group, individual, and family settings.
Sober Living
Transitional housing designed to support individuals recovering from substance use disorders offering a safe, supportive and structured environment for practicing long-term sobriety, while reintegrating back into daily living.
Day Treatment
In a PHP, patients live at home but follow an intensive schedule of treatment. Most programs require you to be on-site for about 40 hours per week.
Intensive Outpatient Program
An intensive outpatient program (IOP) falls between inpatient care and traditional outpatient services, with therapy and skills-building activities designed to support recovery and provide flexibility. IOP is ideal for those needing support but not the 24/7 care of a residential facility.
Outpatient
Outpatient treatment offers flexible therapeutic and medical care without the need to stay overnight in a hospital or inpatient facility. Outpatient care typically offers a range of therapies and medical interventions individuals can attend alongside daily life.
Virtual & In-Home Care
The delivery of therapeutic services utilizing technology such as video conferencing, online messaging or phone calls, allowing for flexibility, comfort and increased access to care.
Licensed Primary Mental Health
Some primary care providers offer mental health diagnosis and treatment. This can prevent patients from developing more serious conditions.
Co-Occurring Disorders
Substance use and mental health can occur simultaneously as co-occurring disorders. Treatment for co-occurring disorders involves therapy and other personalized interventions to address both conditions.

Terrifying place for a child to be hospitalized. The staff bully the children and make excuses to prevent the mandated daily phone calls with guardians from taking place. Don't let your child be admitted here for a mental health crisis!!

I felt unsafe and even told the techs that. I had to wait a day and a half when asking the nurse on my unit for something🤦‍♀️ I also didn’t even know I was getting out the day I did, found out a couple hours before.

I'm am so unhappy with my experience here and my daughter's experience here. From the moment I checked her on until the moment I waited outside for 2 hours to pick her up. They treat the kids more like prisoners than children. I never got one phone call from a dr or therapist to tell me how my daughter was doing . They upped my daughter's medication without telling me!!! I am so disgusted with with place.

I was in for depression for nearly two weeks. I wish I would have had access to more of my music, which was a coping mechanism for me. I met friends, and it was a learning experience. I want friendly workers and- just seriously- I wanted to die and tried to kill myself, I don't need someone being mean. One day I was going to go to sleep before the designated earliest time we could sleep. I was tired and she came in and very rudely woke me up. The cafe was great for a mental hospital. Overall friendly, our days were very scheduled. Kept us of the same age together. Very casual among patients. Had some very unfriendly and just plain unpleasant workers, and our days may have been too scheduled. Three nurses were not liked at all by anyone.
