5280 High School is a free charter high school on the south side of Denver where students can learn and recover alongside peers who are also seeking recovery from substance use, eating disorders, self-harm, or other conditions.

Recovery in an Academic Environment

5280 requires students to attend schoolwide recovery meetings called B.O.A.T. (Being Open and Authentic Together). They focus on creating community where students can reach their goals and discuss their recovery situation with teachers and peers. 5280 aims to reduce bullying and ensure the campus remains substance-free.

Curriculum

5280’s curriculum includes smaller classes than the nearby school system’s classes with an emphasis on hands-on learning. The academic courses include integrated humanity courses for English and social studies, math up to precalculus, Spanish, visual arts, stagecraft woodwork, and digital multimedia creation with Adobe Creative Cloud. In addition to courses, students must complete a 4-week internship in 11th grade, a senior project in 12th grade, and a 2-day deep dive into an extracurricular passion each semester.

For additional growth, students can enroll in the gifted and talented program and take additional college classes. Additionally, students have opportunities to work on extracurricular art and design projects. 5280 wants to equip students to use technology like professionals do.

Enrollment

Students can enroll for free for grades 9 to 12 at any time in the year as long as they are age 20 or younger. As a private school, 5280 can admit clients outside the school district and receives students from different parts of the Denver metro area. They provide interested students and parents a tour and conversation. 5280 doesn’t participate in the Denver SchoolChoice process.
