Sunshine Coast Health Centre is a men-only residential centre, offering meaning-based treatment for mental health issues such as anxiety, substance and alcohol use disorders, depression, personality disorders, ADHD, PTSD, and trauma. Their non-12-Step treatment philosophy empowers individuals to see themselves as the author of their own lives, with meaning-centered therapy being one way they instill this. Sunshine Coast’s therapists help clients gain an awareness of who they are, how they fit into the world, and their strengths and limitations.

A Serene, Seaside Location

Sunshine Coast is located on 9 beautiful acres with a private oceanfront on British Columbia’s Sunshine Coast. They draw on the healing power of nature to contribute to clients’ recovery, understanding that privacy and immersion in nature can have powerful therapeutic properties. Their impressive range of staff includes 24/7 nurses, therapists, wellness therapists, an addictionologist, and psychiatrists with experience treating mental health and addiction. Each therapist is masters-level. Upon admission, clients receive an assessment from a doctor, who decides if clients should detox or move right into treatment. Sunshine Coast operates with compassion and respect, understanding the importance of dignity and transparency regarding success, comfort, and healing.

Addiction And Mental Health Treatment Without The 12-Steps

Non-12-Step programs make spirituality an option Sunshine Coast provides, not something they insist on. Sunshine Coast focuses on what’s behind addiction, treating trauma, PTSD, anxiety, depression, and other mental health disorders. Qualified therapists provide eye movement and desensitization (EMDR) therapy and somatic experiencing. Other therapies include cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT). Sunshine Coast also offers hydrotherapy, art therapy, hypnotherapy, and rTMS (repeated transcranial magnetic stimulation) for depression. During treatment, clients have 10 hours a week of group therapy and meet 1:1 with their primary therapist weekly. Sunshine Coast’s program schedule allows clients to pick from adjunct therapies, including psychoeducation classes, group somatic experiencing, group hypnotherapy, and a writing workshop, among others.

Relax, Recover, And Grow

Sunshine Recovery provides clients with a wholly unique healing experience, starting from their oceanfront location. Clients can enjoy all the amenities that come with this, like swimming, fishing, and other water activities. On-site, they have a pool, a well-stocked fitness room and personal trainer, a sauna, a business center, and more. Internet access and computers keep men connected to work during their stay if need be. Aftercare and alumni services connect clients to recovery resources and a supportive recovery community long after their visit.

Sunshine Coast Health Centre accepts private insurances. They do not accept provincial or territorial insurances.

My Journey with the Program: A Life-Changing Experience As someone with ADHD, procrastination has always been a part of my life, so writing this review has taken me a while. But today, on Christmas, I felt it was the perfect time to express my gratitude because I am still sober. This program has been nothing short of life-changing for me and my family, and I struggle to find the words to describe its impact. During my treatment, not only did I receive incredible support, but my wife was also able to access resources through the program. She gained a deeper understanding of my struggles with PTSD and MDD, which brought us closer together as a family. Two of the most powerful lessons I took away are: 1. Thoughts are not facts. 2. Pain is inevitable, but suffering is optional. These truths resonated deeply, and if you attend the program, they will likely resonate with you, too. If you're struggling today with addiction, PTSD, depression, or other mental health challenges, this program can be a beacon of hope. Exceptional Support Every Step of the Way One of the standout aspects is the staff-to-client ratio. The team includes doctors, a psychiatrist, nursing staff, certified counselors, and an amazing support team, including cleaning and kitchen staff who contribute to making every moment of your stay therapeutic. Even after completing the program, the support continues. They offer services for those critical first weeks post-treatment and ongoing resources for life. Meetings wit

My experience at SCHC was an absolute life-changer. The recovery programming was so well laid out, diverse and accommodating to all. The daily, even hourly, interaction with trained staff members was exceptional. The numerous beautiful outdoor excursions really lead to s new sense of recovery. The accommodations, amenities, meals, and staff were excellent. The peaceful, beautiful location was the perfect location for reflection and life-long personal growth. I would recommend SCHC to anyone seeking a new beginning.

SCHC provided a truly wholistic program offering which enabled me to get on track with fundamental self-care habits on my own accord while also providing life-changing insights, practices and medical/psychiatric help which set me on a path of recovery to optimized mental health and well-being. The staff, setting, nourishment and bonds created with a diverse group of men with similar objectives made SCHC a special experience for me. A more organized, personal orientation by SC staff at the beginning or prior to my stay and perhaps more concentration on the programs relevant to each client’s specific desires and needs are areas which would have enhanced the experience for me. I think a phone application, or a more automated means for real-time scheduling and client communication would also benefit SCHC client experiences.

During my first two months at Sunshine Coast Health Centre, I had nothing but positive things to say. The staff were amazing—caring, attentive, and always made the environment feel welcoming. The doctors, both on-site and those available through online video calls, were truly exceptional and made me feel supported the entire time. Client Services was also outstanding. They constantly went out of their way to make sure everyone felt welcomed, comfortable, and taken care of. Their warmth played a huge part in making the centre feel safe and inviting. Unfortunately, during my final 30 days, I noticed things began to slip. Medication times started to fall behind. There were also moments when it felt like some of the nurses were unsure or uneducated about certain things. Kitchen staff became noticeably short-handed. What used to be a full team of 3–5 people in the kitchen was suddenly down to just two people trying to manage everything. I want to highlight Cindy and Matt, who consistently went above and beyond. They brought genuine care, great energy, and pride in the food and in supporting clients. Their effort really stood out. However, some other staff members seemed disengaged—often avoiding eye contact and showing little care about how meals were prepared or presented. At times, food was served sloppily, like sandwiches being placed in a pile of leftover juices from vegetables. It was disappointing, especially after such a great start, also a huge thank you to the nurses

Terry , and Mellissa as well as a few other nurses were amazing !!!

Loved One of a Former Client

My son was at the lowest point I have ever seen. After a lot of arguing, he finally decided to go. To say this program is life changing, almost still doesn’t do it justice. I have my son back, and he’s even better than before. Soon after he was admitted, he was put on the medication he needed. “I wish I had this 20 years ago”, he said. They target the addiction, but more importantly, they target the mental health too. The friendships he’s made, the experience, the sense of purpose he feels again, it’s just a wonderful place. Richard, thank you. My son is home now, and says “this was the best 30 days I’ve had in 10 years”. If anyone is struggling, this is the place to go.
